The Challenge

Let me begin by saying that I am Nicolus Baslock and among other things I am a writer.  I have a book that's been gestating for a while.  I write poetry and fiction, as well as any number of other devious things.  Most importantly I have this friend, Mike Mitchell.  He's in a band, called City LineThe band sounds great, and at the moment has a track from their new EP can be heard at the link.

This does not bode well for me, or specifically a bet we made.

A bit of history: Mike and I started working together in the days before Gmail had become popular, when hotmail was still ruler, and places like Geocities and Angelfire hosted terrible sites we all knew and loved.  The year was 2005....or some point around than.  Needless to say, he was in a band I randomly found online called Just Six Spaces.  I designed their first "website" if you really want to call it that and some of the bands logos and graphics.  We began talking and trading ideas, and as I was an impressionable young man, I thought it was probably the coolest non-signed band I had ever heard.

Fast forward.  We stayed in contact sporadically, but life being what it is, had not really spoken.  He had done other things, and I had written quite a bit, but neither of us had really hit the stride we imagined we might.  Some time in either late 2009 or early 2010 we made a little wager:

Whoever hit first pays for the other ones first big (fill in the blank).  That meant he would help me secure some kind of publishing for my first book, or if I hit first, I will pay for promotion of and the recording of the most top notch EP my pittance can afford.

Unfortunately I'm a bit nervous.  Although I am progressing nicely on both my book and another project that at the moment can not be named, I heard a single track of his new EP and I'm starting to get nervous.  I want to win this "bet".  Not because I think I'm more talented, skilled or deserving.  It's more a matter of being able to say "I win."

The reason I made this blog is because, I'm getting a bit nervous, like I said.  I will say this: I have no qualms losing to someone as talented as Mitchell and his boys in City Line.  However, the fact of the matter is, I hate losing.  The purpose of this blog will be to follow where we both are to some degree for posterity's sake.  I think that one day we will look back at my sad ramblings and laugh as I throw a twenty dollar bill at him while he cleans my mansion.  Or vice versa.

Needless to say, the gauntlet is officially thrown down.  Time to get to work.
